The Kingsport District Academy is an educational initiative designed to offer (1)a variety of Bible and other studies, (2)the Lay Servant/Lay Speaker Program, and (3)the Certified Lay Minister Program to all lay persons across the Kingsport District. When fully implemented, classes will be offered across the Kingsport District from Blountville to Rogersville with classes meeting in mornings, afternoons and evenings on at least five “campus sites” (churches within the District). Classes will be taught mainly by Clergy and Lay persons within the Kingsport District.
The Bible and other studies will meet one day a week for eight (8) weeks for one and one-half hours (1.5) per class. Classes will be offered on various days and at various times. Classes will be offered in the Spring and Fall of each year. Other studies may be offered from time to time which will meet as appropriate for the study.
The Lay Servant/Lay Speaker Program is described in The Book of Discipline (2012) in paragraphs 266-268. The program provides specified training for all persons and especially for persons wishing to serve their local churches in leadership capacities. It also provides training for those who wish to serve outside their local churches, such as in other churches within the District or in a District capacity. The Lay Speaker Program is designed for those who wish to serve in the pulpit within or outside the local church. These classes will be offered in the Spring and Fall of each year. The class will meet on a Saturday from 8:00AM to 4:00 PM.
The Certified Lay Minister Program is described in The Book of Discipline (2012) in paragraph 271. This program is designed for lay persons who are called to enhance the quality of ministry in the church, especially in small membership churches, to expand team ministry, to preach the word, to provide care ministry, or to assist in program leadership as part of the ministry team of the church or even outside the church. Candidates must be a Certified Lay Servant/Speaker and be recommended for the program by their Pastor and the church council where they hold membership. This program provides an in-depth study over a 17 week period.
